Are we puttering?

Hey Reader!

I spend a lot of time in the yard. The garden. The yard which is a garden.

That space outside? 😄

For the past 20 years I’ve been transforming my large front yard and very large back yard into something other than what they were when I arrived at the house.

Namely large rectangles of poorly maintained grass, with a few horribly pruned shrubs sitting in a row.

I resist calling myself A Gardener, because I refuse to do the things I think a REAL gardener would do.

Like remembering the names of the things I’ve planted. Or choosing plants based on criteria other than that I liked the look of them as I was trawling the nursery.

Basically, I’ve refused to make a plan.

Once or twice I’ve fantasized about hiring a landscape designer to come look around, tell me what I’m doing right (lots, I hope?) and draw me up a layout that I could work on.

Yet still I resist.

For one thing, I do not love to hear about what I’m NOT doing right. Maybe a youngest child holdover? 🤓

But mostly, I want to remain an amateur.

Because I LIKE puttering around, pruning the rosemary that got too big because I didn’t realize it would take over like a floral mob boss. Moving the verbena to the back yard because can't handle the truth of a full southern exposure.

I revel in just messing around, not being a pro, not spending a lot of time studying. This is my playground, and I want it to stay easy and fun.

I don’t have anything riding on it.

If I wanted to make my home an HGTV-worthy showplace and take advantage of every square inch of space I could hire someone to advise me. Who knows, maybe one day I will. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What does that have to do with email?

At the risk of sounding super cheesy, think of your newsletter as a garden. 🌱

Are you content to putter around and make mistakes you’ll learn from, and move things around when they prove to be unsuitable?

Or are you ready to learn how to create a vibrant environment where things will grow beautifully and bloom for years to come?

Either way is fine. Your newsletter, your choice!

But if you’d like to be more intentional about the things you’re planting and watering, I invite you to let me help you.

In Email Intervention, I’ll take a look at what you’ve already got and help you make a plan to make it even better.

You know your subject, you know your audience. You know what message you want to get across. But are you doing it as effectively as you could?

Email Intervention is a full edit and audit, covering all aspects of your newsletter, from subject line to sign off.

You send me a draft, and I will:

  • Assess how well you’re using unstuffy language to get your message across.
  • Tell you how you could use specificity and colorful description to add a little more magic and a little more YOU.
  • Let you know if there are elements you could add to make your format more readable.
  • Look at your call to action and let you know if you can make it stronger, bolder, more appealing.

Here's how it works.

You send me the next issue of your newsletter, including the proposed subject line and preview text. If you can send it as a test from your email platform, fantastic. If not, a word doc or Google doc is fine.

I’ll edit it and tell you exactly why I’d make the changes I suggest. You’ll receive a video of me walking you through the whole process as well as the edited document.

Here’s the catch: You have to send me the email within two weeks of purchase.

Because I’m here to help you with accountability. I believe you can produce something good in two weeks, and if it takes longer than that you are giving in to perfectionism. 😁

I promise to have it back to you within a week of receiving it - so we’re both committing to getting this handled in a timely manner.

You might want to take me up on this offer if:

  • Your newsletter isn’t getting opened or replied to as much as you’d like.
  • Sending it out week after week isn’t making you any money.
  • You’re not sure what your underlying message is, or if you’re getting it across effectively.
  • You don’t know how to write in your authentic voice.
  • You’re worried about not being good enough. (You are.)

It’s easy - just send me your next draft and let’s make it shine!

xo,

Julia
