I love an It Girl

Hey Reader!

When I was 15 one of the cool girls in my high school called me by name.

Meaning that she KNEW MY NAME. 🙀

Which felt kind of miraculous, if I’m being honest. Because while I wasn't an outcast or anything, I was hardly in the upper social echelons.

In retrospect it doesn’t seem quite so momentous that she was aware of my existence; we went to school together, after all. But at the time I was thrilled beyond measure.

Then it happened again at my current job.

The very coolest girl, she of the gorgeous hair, mentioned that she’d noticed that MY hair was getting long and I was right up over the moon again. 🌒🌓🌔

It feels good to be recognized at all, but let’s be real; The Person I Secretly Admire Notices Me is right smack in the middle of the dopamine bingo card. 🎯

Unbeknownst to you, all kinds of people may be paying attention.

And they may be really interesting or important people aka THE COOL GIRLS aka PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY💰. They may think you’re pretty cool yourself.

Running a business can feel like screaming into the void. 🗣️ It's nice to know there are people out there who see you.

In which case, you’d better make sure you’re giving them good intel.

I'm always blah, blah, blah, tell your stories, let your personality shine through. And that’s important, but how about telling people exactly what it is you can do for them?

And not in just a here are my offers kind of way, but also in a here's my particular skill set sort of way. 💡

I've been helping my friend Anne with her newsletter. She'd like more massage clients, in particular people who want Thai massage. And honestly - what even is that⁉️

I know it takes place on the floor and that you're fully clothed. Which describes an awful lot of other activities as well.

It turns out Anne’s adapted the modality and kind of made her own version, so honestly a little explication is helpful, even if you’re not as ignorant as me. 😅

I told her encouraged her to tell people what it's all about: what to expect in a session, and also why you might choose that over some other type of body work.

(Want to find out for yourself? Subscribe! She’s got a terrific newsletter about fitness and nutrition, you can take online classes with her, learn about menopause, or maybe get that massage…)

Anyway. Here's the thing:

We don't know what we don't know. 🤔

So how about in your next email you pick a thing that you offer and really let people understand what it's for, why it's different from what other people are offering, what the benefits would be...

Imagine that your readers really have no idea what it is that you do. Because honestly? They probably don’t know as much as you think.

So tell them. With joy, with specificity, with enthusiasm. 💋

Because they're probably over there thinking you're super cool and don't even know they exist. Invite them into your world and let them feel like they matter.

Yours in unconscious popularity,

Julia

Jade knows that even being the cool girl isn't always enough to get the respect you deserve, and so does this email. Forward it to someone who wants all the attention anyway.
